A recent article in the August 2013 issue of Woman’s Day addressed many ways to drive down car costs.  Here are a few examples of ways to keep a little extra money in your pocket:

Maintenance:  Heed Alerts.  If the check engine light is on, have the car looked at immediately.  Something like a bad oxygen sensor could rob you of fuel mileage.”

In addition to a bad O2 sensor, there could be multiple reasons for an illuminated CEL light.  Many drivers say that their check engine light has been on for months or longer.  Until you know the real reason for your dashboard light, it is best to have your vehicle properly diagnosed to ensure that you are not causing damage to the vehicle.

Consider a Specialist:  For targeted fixes, a specialist may cost less than a general mechanic.”

Das Autohaus specializes in Volkswagen & Audi repair and maintenance.  After 15 years of focusing on German vehicles, we can pinpoint and diagnose your import vehicle much quicker than a shop that works on anything and everything.  We cannot tell you how many times someone else has improperly diagnosed a VW or Audi simply because they are not used to working on these vehicles.

Gas:  Lighten Up.  An extra 100 lbs in or on your vehicle could reduce your miles per gallon by up to 2%.  Drop some cargo and save $0.04 to $0.08 per gallon.  If you need to travel with a lot of stuff, pack the trunk instead of using a roof rack, which can decrease fuel economy by 5%.”

Baby Your Ride:  Follow your car’s maintenance schedule, and use the correct type and grade of motor oil, which can improve gas mileage by 1-2%.  Properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by up to 3.3%.  Find the correct maximum load on a decal on the driver’s side door jamb or in the owner’s manual; don’t use the number on the tire.”
