There are SO many things that can cause a misfire fault code (codes may be a P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303 or P0304).  Carbon on the intake valves is one scenario that may cause a Check Engine Light due to misfire.

Carbon is a by-product of the combustion process. Add in a little fuel and these carbon deposits “stick” and build up over time.  Heat from the engine hardens these deposits on the valves and creates a situation where the engine cannot function as designed.  Thus, engine misfires.
